Local Area

Riviere Towans, St Ives Bay, Phillack Hayle.

At The Penellen, Beach View House, Dolphin, Mermaid and Chymoresk we are located in Riviere Towans, Phillack, Hayle and are close to St. Ives and Carbis Bay. St Ives Bay has 3 miles of golden sand that stretches from Gwithian to the estuary at Hayle. Holiday makers from all over the world congregate on this beautiful long stretch of sand where temperatures soar in the summer months.

Riviere Towans - Towans is the Cornish for sand dunes and the Riviere Towans stand proud for all to see and are a rich source of wildlife. Riviere Towans offer enjoyable coastal walks and fun for all the family. The great beach of St Ives Bay offers scope for everyone from surfers to sunbathers. The beach of St. Ives Bay is excellent for swimming, with shallow pools for younger children to paddle in and is patrolled by lifeguards during the summer months, a secluded spot is always just minutes away. Godrevy Lighthouse which is no longer manned, stands on a small island offshore and provided the inspiration for the novelist Virginia Woolf in her novel 'To the Lighthouse'. The Hayle estuary stretches from Copperhouse to Lelant Saltings. The Hayle estuary provides a haven and an invaluable feeding ground for many types of migratory birds each year including some rare ones.

At Riviere Towans the coast footpath leads round Carbis Bay and St Ives in one direction and to Portreath in the other. The coast path is just 10 yards from the Penellen, making it ideal for walkers. Portreath and Godrevy also have superb coastal walks with views that must be seen.

All our self catering cottages at Hayle are just 4 miles from Carbis Bay and St Ives, the world famous resorts with azure blue sea and hot golden sands. St Ives is also famous for the Tate Gallery and a large colony of artists that come from all over the world for the 'Special Light' of St. Ives. St. Ives has a special quality with narrow cobbled streets and a host of fantastic restaurants.

Further North there are the surfing beaches of Porthtowan, Perranporth and of course Fistral Beach at Newquay where the World Surfing Championships are held. Newquay also offers a variety of entertainment throughout the year.

Moving west from St Ives is the wonderfully scenic drive to Lands End, England's most westerly point. This drive has been described as one of the Top Ten Scenic Drives in the World and is well worth the effort. Around the corner (and now on the South Coast) we have the fantastic beach at Porthcurno where you could be fooled into thinking that you were in the Caribbean, beautiful white sand and azure blue sea, dolphins frolicking in the surf, a truly superb location. Of course there is also the Minack Theatre perched on top of the cliffs above the beach. This world famous open-air Theatre hewn from the granite cliffs and visited by some of the Great Theatre company's of the world. Plays run every night throughout the summer months; a glass of wine and a picnic complete this unforgettable experience.
