Visitors to West Cornwall this September will have the chance to experience something a little different when the historic Dutch tall ship Morgenster arrives in Penzance for four days of sailing.
From Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th September 2026, the traditional square-rigged vessel will operate three-hour sailing trips from Penzance Inner Harbour, giving passengers the opportunity to experience the Cornish coastline from the deck of a genuine tall ship.
Built in 1919, Morgenster has enjoyed a remarkable history. Originally launched as a herring fishing vessel, she has survived two world wars and was even seized during the 1970s on suspicion of being involved with pirate radio — a claim which later proved unfounded. Following an extensive restoration, she was recommissioned in 2008 as a classic clipper-brig and now travels internationally as a sail-training vessel.
Passengers visiting Penzance won't simply have to sit back and watch. Those who want to get involved can help the crew handle the sails, haul the lines or even take a turn at the wheel. Alternatively, you can simply relax on deck and enjoy the spectacular views across Mount's Bay.
Sailings will depart from Penzance Inner Harbour on:
- Thursday 10th September – 2:20pm
- Friday 11th September – 3:00pm
- Saturday 12th September – 4:20pm
- Sunday 13th September – 4:50pm
Tickets are currently advertised at £55 for adults and £40 for under-15s, with advance booking recommended due to the limited number of sailings.
With Penzance only a short journey from Hayle and St Ives Bay, it's another fantastic experience to add to a September break in West Cornwall.
Whether you're a keen sailor or simply fancy seeing Cornwall's coastline from an entirely different perspective, the arrival of Morgenster promises to be one of the more unusual events on the local calendar this September.
